A float switch is a type of level sensor, a device used to detect the level of liquid within a tank. The switch may be used to control a pump, as an indicator, an alarm, or to control other devices. One type of float switch uses a mercury switch inside a hinged float. It does not need to provide power supply, has no complicated circuit, and has the advantages of smaller volume and longer working life than general mechanical switches.
Most float switches utilize a magnetic reed switch to open or close the circuit. The reed is encased in a glass tube, which is cemented into a plastic or stainless steel stem with epoxy. As long as the material is selected correctly, it can be used in any liquid or pressure.
By using a permanent magnetic float level switch and reed contact the switching operation is non-contact, free from wear and needs no power supply. All functioning of the magnetic float switch is fully independent of vibrations, bubble formations, foaming, conductivity, and harmful vapors.
